Healthy Advantages of Probiotics

The World Health Organization has defined Probiotics as living organism that if taken in sufficient amount have a positive effect on our health.

Probiotics recover the balance of our intestinal flora. Duet to this, our intestines are protected from bacteria, viruses and other toxic products and therefore we develop a better immune system.

The most common types of microorganisms, which are used as probiotics are the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and bifidobacteria. Also, certain bacilli and yeasts are useful.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, as probiotics were discovered it was thought that Probiotics had a beneficial effect on the host, by establishing a better intestinal balance.

Nowadays specific effects are studied and documented about probiotics. This research shows that probiotics reliefs intestinal health issues and that it has a curing effect on induced digestive system and urinary tract etc. Probiotics is also often labeled probioticum. These two concepts are the same. The name probioticum has been given many meanings in history. The most famous is from Greece; 'for life'. However, they all did agree with each other; health would be enhanced by a bacterial product.

Bacteria have a reputation for causing diseases. The idea that we swallow these bacteria to stimulate a beneficial effect on our health seems literally hard to digest. What people often do not realize is that there are bad and good bacteria. Probiotics are live micro-organisms consisting of beneficial bacteria. Scientific evidence has proven that you can prevent and treat disease by eating certain foods and supplements that contain probiotics.

It is estimated that there are about one hundred million microorganisms in the normal healthy gut. These micro-organisms in general, don’t make us sick. Most of them are useful. If you take these probiotics, these beneficial bacteria end up in our intestines. These microorganisms keep the harmful micro-organisms under control. Because of this, they contribute to better digestion and absorption of nutrients in our body, which improves the immune system.
